Philosophy  

The philosophy of the Department of Teacher Education in Niger Delta University is to produce qualified, competent and professional teachers to teach various subjects at the Secondary School Level. The programmes in the Department are therefore structured to equip student teachers with the principles, theories and knowledge, necessary for proper instructional, classroom and student management within the context of education

Rationale for the Programmes
The programmes in the Department ofTeacher Education in the Faculty of Education offer learning experience to undergraduate students in specified areas of instruction. Each programme is aimed at producing manpower to take up teaching positions in learning institutions and other private and public educational agencies. Each programme is further designed in response to the educational demands in Nigeria for qualified and seasoned educationists in the various areas toward meeting the challenges of the 21st century

 


Aim and Objectives

The main objectives ofthe Department are to:

i. produce graduate teachers who possess sound academic andprofessional training in education; 

ii. provide highly motivated, conscientious and efficient classroomteachers for all levelofour educational system;

iii. train teachers who are conscious of the social, cultural, political,scientific and technological progress ofthe country;

iv. equip teachers with both physical and intellectual skills to enablethem function effectively in the society; and

v. use their specialized training to give leadership in demonstratingtheoretical and practical expertise in classroom and laboratory.

Specific Objectives of the B. A. Ed. Arts Education Programme

i. produce graduate teachers who possess academic andprofessional training in reading, creative arts, historicalanalysis and diplomatic relations;

ii. produce highly motivated, conscientious and efficientteachers who are able to sustain the culture of arts,innovation and cultural heritage;

iii. train teachers who are conscious of the cultural values ofthe Nigeria society in relations to other societies; and

iv. advance the knowledge and ideals of creative mindsamong teachers for the sustenance of socio-culturalvalues, customs and tradition.

Specific Objectives of the B. Sc. (Ed) Science Programme

i. equip teachers with intellectual skills in science subjectsand to enable them function effectively as teachers intheschools;

ii. produce graduate teachers who will use their specializedtraining to give leadership in scientific demonstration,theoretical and practical expertise in teaching andworkplace experiences;

iii. train teachers who are conscious of the scientific andtechnological progress of the Nigeria society and in aglobal perspective;

iv. develop highly motivated professionally drivenconscientious science teachers in the demonstration ofclassroom experience; and

v. encourage graduate science teachers who possessexpanded academic and professional training in scienceand related disciplines for national scientific andtechnological development.

Specific Objectives ofthe B. Sc. (Ed). Social Science Programme

i. equip teachers with both physical and intellectual skillstoenable them function effectivelyinthe society;

ii. encourage graduate teachers who will use theirspecialized training to give leadership in demonstratingtheoreticaland practicalexpertisein workplace;

iii. train teachers who are conscious of the social, cultural,political, economic, and technological progress of theNigeria society in a global perspective;

iv. develop highly motivated professionally drivenconscientious teachers in the demonstration ofclassroomexperience;and

v. produce graduate teachers who possess expandedacademic and professional training in humanities andrelated disciplinesfornationaldevelopment.
