Introduction

The Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) Unit is responsible for preparing and exposing students of the University for Industrial Work Situation they are likely to meet after graduation. This, the Unit does in collaboration with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), the National University Commission (NUC) and the various employers/industries.

Objectives

Specifically, the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) programme are to:
  • Provide avenue for students of the University to acquire industrial skills and experience in their course of study;
  • Expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machinery that may not be available in the University;
  • Make the transition from school to the world of work easier, and enhance students’ contacts for later job placement;
  • Provide students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real work situation thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice; and
  • Enlist and strengthen employers’ involvement in the entire education process and prepare students for employment after graduation.

Functions of the Unit

  1. Organize regular orientation programme in collaboration with the ITF Zonal Office, Yenagoa for both Departmental coordinators and students.
  2. Prepare master and placement lists of SIWES students for processing by the NUC and ITF Headquarters, Jos.
  3. Seeking of industrial placement for undergraduate students enrolled in disciplines scheduled for participation in SIWES.
  4. Prepare schedule and ensure the visitation of staff on supervision to students on attachment assigned to them.
  5. Attend to staff and students with difficulties during industrial training attachment.
  6. Ensure regular Departmental Coordinators’/SIWES Committee meetings.
  7. Ensure regular attendance to the quarterly Zonal SIWES Directors’/Coordinators’ meetings.
  8. Ensure Students return their log-books and forms 8 for onward submission to the Zonal Area Office, Yenagoa.
  9. Ensure the processing of SIWES programme participating staff and students’ payments of allowances.
  10. Fostering of close links between the university, ITF and industries participating in SIWES programme.
