Vision
Medical Laboratory Science is a dynamic and exciting profession with long term career prospects. This degree programme is designed to provide a broad basis of fundamental scientific knowledge and application such that the graduates of the programme are skilled to meeting the changing needs of modern scientific knowledge in Health Care and to enable them proceed for further training. The BMLS programme is built around a core of basic and advanced theoretical knowledge and clinical practices, through the experienced Lecturers and Medical Laboratory Scientists.
The object of the degree is to impart this knowledge of modern biomedical research, theories, skills and techniques to the students. Skills learnt in the Medical Laboratory Sciences are at the forefront of advances in medical research, including Medical Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Medical Microbiology, Haematology, Blood Transfusion Science, HistoCyto Sciences as well as Pharmaceutical industry, Forensic science, Veterinary science, Health, Safety and Food sciences. Therefore, a graduate of the program will have a science degree (B.MLS) appropriate for a career in a wide variety of industrial and public sector environments.
In addition, our Medical Laboratory Scientists have a well-defined career in the Health Service. Our programme have been designed to involve a close collaboration with Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH), Okolobiri, Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa and some other accreditated health institutions. The courses offered are designed to expose the students in core areas like Medical Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion Science, Medical Microbiology, HistoCyto Sciences, , Virology, Immunology and Molecular Biology
The students are also required to broaden their knowledge by taking ancillary courses in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Biochemistry, Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology and information technology.
Core courses in the clinical areas of the programme must be taught by professional Medical Laboratory Scientists. Moreover, students from their 3th to 5th year of training will undergo mandatory hospital-laboratory postings as trainee Medical Laboratory Scientists to broaden their practical skills under the supervision of practicing Medical Laboratory Scientists.
On completion of the five year degree programme in the University and having passed all the prescribed examinations as well as meeting other necessary requirements, students are inducted into the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) after which they proceed for one year internship in any approved Medical Laboratory in the country. Upon completion they are given license to practice by the Council. This successful completion then qualifies them to proceed for the one year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Philosophy
The philosophy of the Department shall be the training and production of manpower grounded in sound academic and professional background for the production of Medical Laboratory Scientists; To produce Medical Laboratory Scientists who would perform effectively in Medical Diagnostic services and satisfy internationally recognizable standards necessary for National development; To produce Medical Laboratory Scientists with sufficient managerial ability to play a leadership role in training and practice of Medical Laboratory Science through research, scholarship and provision of quality service.
